Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge
Moist-soil Habitat Restoration

Purpose: To improve migratory bird habitat on Cameron Prairie NWR by renovating/replacing levees and installing several water control structures. This project provides valuable moist-soil habitat for mallard, gadwall, widgeon, green-winged teal, white-fronted geese and other wintering waterfowl common to the Gulf Coast. The project will be managed by the USFWS to increase seed production of native plants. In addition to waterfowl, shorebird and wading bird use will increase with improved moist-soil management. In the recent years, Cameron Prairie NWR has cooperated with Ducks Unlimited on a similar project that enabled implementation of youth waterfowl hunting on the refuge. Development of this project has expanded youth waterfowl hunting opportunities on Cameron Prairie NWR.

Location: Approximately 25 miles southeast of Lake Charles, LA (Cameron Parish)
